Professional Background


Dr David Edgar is head of the Regional Immunology Service for Northern Ireland which is based at the Royal Hospitals, Belfast

He now leads a team of three Consultant Immunologists, with additional trainee medical staff.

Dr Edgar directs the Regional Immunology Laboratory Service and provides clinical outpatient, day case and inpatient services for adults and children with primary immune deficiency, complex or severe allergic or autoimmune disorders. 

Dr Edgar graduated in medicine from Queen's University Belfast in 1985, having already graduated with BSc(Hons) in Medical Microbiology in 1982.

He undertook general professional training in the Royal Hospitals medical rotation and the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children between 1986 and 2000.

His higher specialist training in Clinical Immunology commenced in Belfast (1990-92) and was based in Nottingham (1992-1996). He took up his post as Consultant Immunologist in Belfast in 1996.
